EGAR  I'm having trouble downloading version 5. I click the link to download and I'm directed back to this page. The problem exists on both Firefox and Safari. Is it me or is there something wrong with the link?

DP8  Please make sure that your are not blocking HTTP referrer, such as with "private browsing" or other internet security software - the download files hosted at macupdate.com require the referrer information so that we can control the huge bandwidth costs involved. If that doesn't work, please contact me- desktop@macupdate.com

EGAR  The referrer URL was being blocked by my firewall. I changed it to allow referrers and the download worked. Thanks for the help!

By the way, why do other downloads from the MacUpdate site work when the referrer is blocked, just not MacUpdate Desktop?

DP8  Many of the downloads on macupdate.com are hosted by our download servers, but not all of them. Files hosted on our download servers require the referrer - files hosted on third party servers may or may not.

PINTOFGUINNESS  I am having trouble with this version scanning all my applications. It says I only have 24 applications and that is all it will scan. It also has trouble with the version numbers on some of them, saying I have an earlier version installed when I have the current version installed.

I have trashed all prefs and reinstalled but the same thing keeps happening.

    Any ideas?

DP8  Please re-download the application or contact us - desktop@macupdate.com

The original upload had a problem which could be causing your issues.

As for version numbers, sometimes developers mistakenly forgot to properly update the version information in the code. Please report these applications to us so that we can confirm and work with the developers to correct. You may use the "Set version to current" option to override the local version number so that it will show up properly.

    thanks

JOHN QUINN  How do I get the trial to start? After launching the app, I am prompted to log in with my MacUpdate account, after which again I am told that it was a free account and that I should upgrade to gain access to the app. What about the 10 days of trial? I tried to "register" from within the app to see if a trial option would come up, but all it says is "checking account status" and my log in details become greyed out.

JOHN QUINN  Sorry, nevermind. I TOTALLY overlooked that same question further down the page. Clicking on the provided link to register is certainly the easiest way. The entire process could have been made a little more intuitive though.

DP8  The login panel has a "Register" button, which will present the MacUpdate Member Registration window - you enter in your name and email, and then on the next screen you can select "Trial" or payment method. If you already have a MacUpdate member account for the email address you enter, it will use that account for the Trial, otherwise, it will create a new Trial membership.

You can also sign up for the trial on the macupdate.com website if you already have a membership and are logged into the site.

VERYVITO  As a several-times daily visitor to Macupdate, I've been interested in the idea of a desktop app for a while now (I've tried similar apps, but the failure rate just seems to make them useless). I just downloaded and tried this, and I have to say, I'm impressed so far.

Response time from the developer seen in earlier comment feedback is also a good sign, so I finally laid down the 20 bucks to become a desktop member. Looking forward to seeing where this goes. Thanks!

Still keeping MUMenu to view the new stuff I don't have yet, though. :)

    **...

RICHCASTILLO  I have been using the MacUpdate website for several years and I love it. I place a lot of weight on the user reviews in making software purchasing decisions. So, when MacUpdate Desktop came out in v5 I was persuaded to finally anty up and become a paying member. However, I am generally unhappy with this desktop application. It does not feel like a refined v5 app. It feels like a 0.9 beta because it has so many rough edges and bugs. Since I am using it on 3 computers between work and home I believe the problems cannot be attributed to my computer, except that the common thread is that they all are running Snow Lep.

On my MacBook Pro with Airport connection the program barley functions. It will be downloading 2 updates with an advancing progress bars while 2 others update complain that I have lost Internet connectivity. On all of the machines, when any event takes place like the completion of a download, it will bounce back to the beginning of my list, loosing the place I was working at. If you have a dozen apps downloading this can be a real irritant. There are at least 50 programs in my list that have no lookup and most of them are mainstrean apps that are referenced on the MacUpdate website. Some programs such as Email Commander simply will not update, just return an error. When downloading a dozen updates at a time frequently half of them will install and half of them will give a timed out error and I'll have to go back and do them one at a time.

This app has great potential to be a huge time saver in keeping my Macs maintained. However, it has so many irritating rough edges that I cannot give it better than 2 stars right now. I hope the developer is able to resolve all of the issues and make this a solid app.

DP8  Thank you for your feedback. We have been working hard this year on MacUpdate Desktop 5 to not only improve upon what MacUpdate Desktop 4 offered, but to make it the best Mac update solution out there. As noted in the listing, this is a completely brand new application, and we realize that has has room for improvement, which is why we welcome your feedback! It was extensively beta tested, and your issue with timing out has not been reported before, but we will look into it. We are committed to improving MacUpdate Desktop but can only do so with your feedback and support - look for an update soon that will address some of your other issues. Please feel free to send in feedback from the application, or to desktop@macupdate.com.

    thanks!

ARCHMISSION  This program does not seem to scan my HD. Also, it does not pull all the current info from MacUpdate website.

    No widgets...

    No screen savers...

    No Pref Panes...

    Also MUMenu has quit working.

The desktop program will not scan folders within other folders, etc.

Sorry to say that MacUpdate Desktop is currently worthless to me and also the fact that MUMenu is now broken I am not able to do anything that I could do freely since I can only find out new updates via the web.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Microsoft could learn from them as much as GM, Ford, etc.

DP8  The issue you emailed to us concerning the community listing has been fixed for the update we will be releasing soon, but should also show up properly in 5.0 as well.

If you could please email me your issue with MUMenu, we would appreciate that too - it should be working fine.

DP8  You need to register your account for the Trial membership. You may do this in the application itself in the Register window - the second step will allow you to select Trial or payment. You can also sign up for the Trial online here - https://www.macupdate.com/members/desktoptrial

DP8  Most likely, you are hiding or blocking the referrer when you are browsing (various security programs enable this for "private" browsing).

In order to download apps hosted on MacUpdate servers, they need to come from macupdate.com domain names. So if you block the referrer URL, it can't see that and loops you back. This is to prevent extreme bandwidth costs from direct outside linking.

Try disabling the referrer blocking - or contact me desktop@macupdate.com and I will be glad to help you out.

DP8  AppFresh is a nice application, but the goal of MacUpdate Desktop is to offer a cleaner, faster, and more accurate update experience by leveraging our long history as the leader in Mac software updates. An important part of MacUpdate Desktop is the ability to create Watch Lists of the apps that you care about, and have them synced automatically to your account on the website. You can add new applications to your Watch Lists from the website, and then install them with one click from MacUpdate Desktop. Watch List items will also send you an email the instant a new version is released. We are also focused on providing a better user experience through our Smart Scan system - which shows you the applications and updates that you care about, and not every little applescript executable or helper application or readme.app that can't be updated. Finally, we want to provide the most accurate update information possible and go to great lengths to deliver the most updates to you - AppFresh will often mark an app as being up-to-date when it isn't, or will mark an app as outdated when it isn't or as unknown. We realize that MacUpdate Desktop has room for improvement - and we welcome your feedback. We lowered the membership price specifically so that we could help as many Mac users as possible keep their Mac updated and secure in the easiest way possible. Give it a try, and let is know what you think - desktop@macupdate.com

    thanks!

MISHA  We don't list AppFresh because the application doesn't meet our standards. osx.iusethis.com has many listings that are out of date and AppFresh poorly matches a lot, as well.

The last thing we want is for our users accustomed to MacUpdate's comprehensiveness to download AppFresh via us believing that they are getting anywhere near the same experience and then being accordingly disappointed with the result.

If this seems a little incredulous, consider that *many* people when informed of MacUpdate Desktop respond with "Why would I need that? I just use Mac OS X's built-in Software Update."

Not everyone is a savvy power use and MacUpdate Desktop is designed to be useful and approachable for all user levels.
