DESCRIPTION
MacPilot can enable and disable hidden features in Mac OS X, optimize and repair your system, and perform numerous routine maintenance operations with the click of a button!

Pro user or not, you can now increase computer performance with only a few clicks of the mouse. Optimize your network for broadband connectivity, completely customize Apple File Sharing, perform essential maintenance without having to remember mind boggling acronyms, and much more. However, those are just a few of the many reasons why MacPilot is your choice over Cocktail, TinkerTool and Onyx.

Enable the "cut" option in the Finder, disable menu items for security, disable icon caches, set history limits, erase recently used files, prevent your dock from being modified, turn off all system animations, increase the speed at which windows resize, change which format screenshots are taken in, set a default name and location for screenshots, disable a secondary processor, the startup chime, and even change the login window picture. Over 900 features in total!

CTKMND  Remove unused preferences doesn't work in Leopard... Pity since I can't find any other that does that.

Documentation would be a requirement for me if I were to pay $20 for this. It's getting to big and complicated not to have it.

And finally, what feature works with what system? I.e. what works in Leopard and what does not?

KOINGO SOFTWARE  Features which do not work in other versions of Mac OS X are automatically hidden. We were unaware the Unused Preferences feature was broken. We will investigate this immediately. As for documentation, each preference in the General tab (over 850 features there) has a help tag associated with it (appears in the yellow bar). For which features are you looking for additional documentation?

KOINGO SOFTWARE  After further testing, the Erased Unused Preferneces feature seems to work fine under Leopard. Can you please elaborate on the problem you are experiencing?

CTKMND  Thank you for replying!

Something isn't right...

Clicking 'Scan' in Unused Preferences and nothing happens. It just sits there and there's no related activity on the hard disk as far as I can tell. It's like the command in the script isn't found or something. Is there some runtime library missing? Don't know what more to say unfortunately.

Also, something I've longed for that finally showed up in the news features-section, "Downloaded App Warning" - it doesn't do anything when I try to check the box. I.E. not possible to change the state of it.

Finally, the yellow box info is good but often sparse at best. A more thorough description of what happens in your system would be good in a seperate documentation. Especially in days like these... ;)

Using MacPilot 3.3.1 and Leopard 10.5.7.

DROOPYSIGNAL  Where are the new features? Why can't they release documentation like just every other software developer?

DANA SUTTON  Funny, the Version Tracker blurb says 900 features. I haven't counted the items listed on the developer's Features page, but they don't look like they add up to more than 100 at most.

KOINGO SOFTWARE  Turn off "Hide features for software which is not installed" in the preferences window, then click the General tab in the main window, and select the first item in the list on the left, and select all. There's 847 features listed in the first tab alone :)

ROB.H  Works well enough, but when there are free alternatives (like Secrets or Onyx) that do the same thing, then it's difficult to justify the $19.95 price tag.

MAJORMACINTOSH  WTF? This tool isn't free?

The developer is clearly a windows developer. The user interface is ugly like hell and totally not OSX-a-like. A mess really.

There are other free and better options like onyx.

MIBRILANE  Is it me or did like 20 features disappear from the Tools > Disk & Files area with the new version 3.2.3? Where is the button to delete ACLs?

CERNIUK  Neat application, just purchased. Do not like the "can install 5 times" approach.

I rebuild my system frequently and this will ultimately cause me to ditch this software as I will not bother calling them for resolution after my 5th install on my system.

Odd such a little obscure app has such stringent and user-hostile copy protection.

KOINGO SOFTWARE  If you to not delete your preferences file which contains your registration, you should not have to reactivate the product.

CHAS_M  Not as odd as you "rebuilding your system frequently."

Unless you are a very bored Windows user, that really is a huge waste of your time. Macs don't need this sort of treatment at all.

MARK97  I may be wrong but the limited install is for that version. Each time the version is updated so is your number of installs. If you need to install it more than five time there is probably a problem the developer can help you handle.

I think you've blown this way out of proportion.

IGAUCHO  I think the only thing Mac Pilot is missing is the ability to create cron jobs. Other than that it has about every option you could possibly want.

EASER  I haven't used this. It certainly looks to be very helpful. But what I want is a program that forces the Finder to remember column width settings in Finder windows and to force any new window (with column view) to have a predetermined column with setting. I've seen nothing like this. I use PathFinder because it does allow me to do both (not to mention that it gives me icon and font sizes that I can actually see). Anyone know of any program that does to the Finder what I want? I've certainly tried programs that restore window settings, but not one of them actually restores the column widths to what I had set. They always go immediately to the minimalist default setting.

EASER  Many thanks! In all the years I've worked with Macs (since 1987), I have never, ever, found a way to do this. Seems really obvious, but it has eluded me. I sincerely hope you have an outstanding holiday season!

JOHN SAWYER CJS  MJSICKEL:

I tried your suggestion of holding down the Option key while resizing a Finder window's columns, and it didn't resize columns in any other Finder window. Is there something I'm missing? I'm using OS 10.5.6.

MJSICKEL  JOHN SAWYER CJS: It's working here on different computers on 10.5.4 and 10.5.5, but maybe you're using a 3rd party keyboard and have CMD and Option keys switched? Try it with the other key, or just keep trying modifier keys until it works...
